As founder of Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, an information and referral service in San Jose, California, I have spent every day of the past 16 years talking with, and exchanging emails with, parents, teachers and other professionals, and adults dealing with dyslexia.
I have always said that if people could listen to my phone calls for just one day, or read my emails, they would “get” the impact of dyslexia across the life span.
They would then understand the urgent need for:
- All teacher training colleges to offer classes on dyslexia to everyone – not just special ed teachers.
- More states to pass laws requiring public and private schools to screen for dyslexia early – in kindergarten, first, and second grade.
- Pediatricians to ask parents questions related to dyslexia at every annual wellness checkup.
- Dyslexia information to be shared in all parent training and child development classes.
